Nervous
Drugs acting on the central and peripheral nervous system — analgesia, sedation, mood, and seizure control. High-alert classes carrying most of the boxed warnings and safety teaching you will be tested on.
Opioid Analgesics
High-yieldPotent pain control via µ-opioid receptor agonism. Watch for respiratory depression; reverse with naloxone.
Benzodiazepines
-pam / -lam High-yieldPotentiate GABA for anxiety, seizures, and sedation. Additive CNS depression — deadly with opioids.
SSRIs
High-yieldFirst-line antidepressants that raise synaptic serotonin. Delayed onset; watch for serotonin syndrome and early suicidality.
Anticonvulsants
High-yieldStabilize neuronal firing to prevent seizures. Many are narrow-therapeutic-index — level monitoring and rash vigilance are essential.
Acetaminophen (Non-Opioid Analgesic)
High-yieldThe go-to fever/pain reliever with no anti-inflammatory or bleeding risk — but hepatotoxic in overdose.
Antipsychotics
High-yieldDopamine-blocking drugs for psychosis. Watch EPS, NMS, metabolic effects — boxed warning in elderly dementia.
Mood Stabilizers (Lithium)
High-yieldLithium controls bipolar mania but has a tiny therapeutic window — levels are everything.
Neuromuscular Blockers
High-yieldParalyze skeletal muscle for intubation/surgery. High-alert: they paralyze but do NOT sedate or relieve pain.
SNRIs
High-yieldAntidepressants that raise serotonin AND norepinephrine — also treat nerve pain. Watch discontinuation & BP.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
High-yieldOlder dual-action antidepressants — effective but "dirty." Anticholinergic effects; LETHAL in overdose.
MAOIs
High-yieldPowerful older antidepressants — the tyramine "wine-and-cheese" hypertensive crisis defines their risk.
Atypical Antidepressants
The "others" — bupropion (no sexual SE, lowers seizure threshold), mirtazapine (sleep/appetite), trazodone (sleep).
CNS Stimulants (ADHD)
High-yieldDopamine/NE boosters for ADHD & narcolepsy. Schedule II — boxed warning for abuse; watch heart, growth, sleep.
Antiparkinson Agents
High-yieldRestore brain dopamine in Parkinson disease. Levodopa-carbidopa is the mainstay; watch wearing-off & impulse control.
Triptans
-triptan High-yieldAbort acute migraines by constricting cranial vessels. Contraindicated in coronary disease; recognizable by -triptan.
General & Local Anesthetics
High-yieldDrugs that abolish sensation or consciousness. High-alert: local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST → lipid rescue), propofol infusion syndrome, and malignant hyperthermia.
Alzheimer / Dementia Agents
Boost acetylcholine (cholinesterase inhibitors) or block glutamate excitotoxicity (memantine) to slow cognitive symptoms. Watch cholinergic bradycardia.
